The story of the jumpsuit .
12.10.2020
The urban dictionary, describes the full length jumpsuit as one of the man repeller items; intended to repel the opposite sex, clogs and harem pants are also mentioned as repelling items . When I wear one of my two, very comfortable, silk jumpsuits in summer, I haven`t noticed if I repel anyone, but it is sometimes seen as a piece with a message, and the history of the jumpsuit and boiler suit might indicate the reason .
The jumpsuit is in some ways, a very practical piece of clothings and in other ways highly impractical .
It is first known as a boiler suit, designed as workwear in heavy cotton canvas . It had large pockets to carry tools and images of railway workers, feeding coal for the boilers, springs to mind .
Or we can imagine a leather one piece suit worn by a, triumphant, driver at Le Mans .
In the 1920s and 1930s, the boiler suit was worn equally by men and women to manifest their political, intellectual beliefs, especially frequented by the Bauhaus movement .
From being a practical cover-all, worn by workers, the boiler suit was adopted by the para shooters in WW2 and got the name jumpsuit . Even Churchill jumped into one, on several occasions .
Both the jumpsuit and boiler suit are classic elements in any wardrobe, and will from time to time reappear at the runways .
It is an easy item to find as vintage, in any style or material .
The jumpsuit is a very versatile piece, either worn a man repeller work wear item or worn with stilettos and jewellery .
Here we introduce a couple of our favorite vintage jumpsuits, from todays search at the world wide web .
