How to wear vintage

The trick to wear vintage, with succes, is to add one vintage piece at a time and, and unless when going to a costume ball, to avoid retro clothing, that are very typical of a certain era and instead choose classic materials and cuts . And may we, humbly, draw the attention to facts; as when shopping for vintage, the quality and tailoring will be very different from the fast fashion .

Details, like a chain to keep the hem of a Chanel jacket in place, comes to mind, linings made from pure silk and materials like cashmere and virgin wool are reminders of the respect, pride, artistry, trade and craftsmanship, that is behind any good vintage item .

As with almost everything else, when the base and preparations are well done, the more likely it is to succeed .

When you, after intensive search, maybe even after years of research, finally, have found the favorite jeans, best leggings, tops and shirts ; the fun begins and, almost, anything can be added to achieve an individual vintage style .

If you have decided to wear a pair of dark blue jeans with a matching shirt, it is possible to change the overall expression, just by adding a turquoise jacket, a leopard jacket, a discreet designer jacket or a vintage bag .

At networkvintage.com we, primarily, show jackets, coats, shoes and bags for that exact reason .

Some pieces of clothing require that you try them on, making online shopping a little bit more demanding and time consuming, if you have to return items that did`t fit as expected, where a jacket or coat usually fit and if it is a rare designer piece, it is worth the expense to have it altered . Some of us, for instance, prefer 3/4 sleeves and already know a tailor that can make the change, but don`t know anyone who can make a pair of jeans fit just as they should .

It is postulated, that with every rule, there is an exception, and your personal editor, here, must admit that even though all designers made beautiful jackets with very broad, wide, shoulders in the 1980s, I felt a little old when I last wore a broad shouldered, checkered jacket to a lunch in Paris . I had bought it on the way to the lunch and when I passed a mirror and saw my reflexion, I looked like the 1980s had asked for its fashion back, and not as modern as I thought; au contraire – I looked as my fashion sense had been stagnated for decades . And the jacket was not retro, but fine British quality by the classic house of Jaeger. Lesson learned.

Fashion fades and style remains, as Coco Chanel said .
